Bobcats’ Teague impresses with All-Star performance

Berryville’s Weston Teague made quite an impression at the Arkansas High School Coaches Association All-Star game on Saturday, June 25, in Conway.

Teague scored four points, grabbed one rebound and blocked two shots in 12 minutes of action for the West All-Stars, who lost to the East by a score of 87-75. Berryville coach Brent Compton, an assistant coach for the West squad, said several people commented on Teague’s performance.

“I had tons of people come up to me over those couple of days and tell me how they liked the way he played,” Compton said. “They bragged on him. They were really impressed with how he got things done.”

Teague was a threeyear starter for Compton’s Bobcats. An imposing 6-9 center, he gave Berryville a dominant presence in the paint on both ends of the floor. As a senior, Teague was the leading scorer for a Berryville team that reached the state tournament semifinals for the first time in more than 50 years.

Teague signed a letter of intent in April to continue his basketball career next season at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan. Compton said Teague has the potential to have a big college career.

“I expect it,” Compton said. “I think he’s going to do great things and if he has a big year, who knows what might happen for him?”

The All-Star preparations gave Compton a chance to spend some more time with Teague and also interact with some of the state’s other successful coaches.

“It was really a great experience to be around the other coaches,” said Compton, whose Berryville teams have won more than 350 games. “We talked some basket ball and I saw how those guys do some things and got to maybe steal some ideas. But it was fun being able to spend some time with Weston and watch him play and just hang out with him, knowing it would be the last time.”

Back home in Berryville, Compton said his team has played several games this summer both at home and on the road.

“We haven’t really had all our guys all the time,” he said. “So we haven’t really seen exactly what we’re going to look like, really.”

One challenge for the Bobcats will be trying to replace Teague on the inside. After three seasons of having a height advantage close to the basket almost every night, Compton said Berryville will have to make some adjustments.

“One thing that’s been glaring is us not having that size,” Compton said. “It’s really showed up in a lot of our games this summer. So that’s going to be a big adjustment. We’ve got some good players coming back but not a lot of players with experience. So our guys off the bench are really going to have to come along over the offseason. And we’ll see. It’s still early to tell really where we’re at.”
