Bobcats split 2 in league play

Posted

The Berryville Bobcats are on a roller-coaster ride through the 4A-1 conference schedule, and last week was no exception.

After overcoming a slow start to beat Gravette 47-32 on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Bobcats fell behind early and were never able to catch up in a 70-58 loss to Pea Ridge in Friday, Jan. 13, at Bobcat Arena.

“Tuesday, on the road, we started slow,” Berryville coach Brent Compton said. “Gravette had a really good game plan, and really had us scouted out really well. We went into halftime and made some adjustments and our kids really executed well and turned it around in the second half. Friday, from the start of the game, I’m not sure. Our kids knew how big a game it was. I don’t know, really, what happened just to be honest with you. We didn’t play really well to start and it just kind of went from there.”

Berryville trailed Gravette 16-12 at halftime, but got its offense in gear in the second half as senior Jake Wilson scored 23 of his 25 points. Wilson had 13 points in the third quarter as the Bobcats outscored Gravette 20-9 to take a seven-point lead.

Against Pea Ridge on Friday, Berryville trailed 17-10 at the end of the first quarter and 30-21 at halftime. The Blackhawks opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to push their advantage to 16 points and were up by 20, 49-29, before Berryville senior Nate Allen hit a three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer to cut the deficit to 17.

Compton drew a pair of technical fouls late in the third quarter and was ejected from the game. He also will have to sit out Tuesday’s game at Prairie Grove.

Wilson scored 20 points in the second half and led Berryville with 28. Senior D.J. Colbert added 18 points for the Bobcats.

After Tuesday’s trip to Prairie Grove, Berryville will host Gentry on Friday for homecoming at Bobcat Arena.

The Bobcats (15-5, 3-3 4A-1) are tied with Gravette for fourth place in the conference. Berryville would like to move up to third place to improve its seeding for the district tournament, which will be played at Bobcat Arena.

“We’re not in any way, shape or form giving in,” Compton said. “We’re going to work twice as hard and be twice as determined. If you see the character of these kids and know the history of this program, everybody knows that we’re going to give it our best.”
