The Berryville Bobcats have five seniors on their roster as they open the 2023-24 basketball season Tuesday night at Green Forest.
But that doesn’t translate into an experienced squad.
Berryville must replace all five starters from last year’s team, whose seniors were part of more than 65 victories over a three-year span.
“We do have five seniors, all really good kids,” Berryville coach Brent Compton said Monday, Nov. 13. “They’re all kids that are going to work hard for us. They’re guys that have been waiting their turn to play more minutes. So we do have some older guys, but as far as varsity experience, we have very little.”
The Bobcats’ five seniors are Ashton Blok, Josh Butler, Andrew McClellan, Dale Nagtalon and Lucas Pierce. Of those five, Nagtalon and Pierce have seen the most significant playing time.
Nagtalon will start at point guard.
“He’s got a chance to have a good season,” Compton said.
Sophomore guard Peyton Smith is talented enough to contribute and sophomore Noah Houghton also could see meaningful minutes, according to Compton.
With an inexperienced roster, Compton said the Bobcats will have their work cut out for them in the rugged 4A-1, which has been dominated the past couple of seasons by the Farmington Cardinals.
“We want to play as hard as we can, we want to see steady improvement — no matter what that is — and we want to play our best basketball at the end, whatever that might be,” he said. “We’re going to develop and work on things that are hopefully going to put us in that situation throughout the season.”
