Bobcats looking for depth on front lines

Berryville coach Macklin Chermak, preparing to begin his third season with the Bobcats, said he’s please to see more players turning out and more competition for playing time.

“Our competition’s a lot better,” Chermak said Monday, Aug. 4. “We have a little more depth and competition for starting spots, both offensively and defensively.”

One spot where the Bobcats have an unquestioned starter is at quarterback. Junior CT Hicks returns after starting every game as a sophomore last season.

“He did a great job last year,” Chermak said. “Obviously we struggled, but I would say he did a great job of having a good attitude all year. He’s kind of moving into more of a leader role, but it’s not all on his shoulders yet.”

Berryville went 1-9 last season, ending the season on a six-game losing streak after beating Huntsville in the 4A-1 conference opener as Hicks ran for one touchdown and passed for another.

To improve on that mark, the Bobcats will need some players to step up on both the offensive and defensive lines.

“I’m a little worried about some two-way players, but we’re working some guys in there,” Chermak said.

The Bobcats don’t have a returning starter on the offensive line.

“It’s going to be a whole new line and I think the hardest part is our D-line’s kind of the same way,” Chermak said. “We’re going to have to kind of be creative and use guys on both sides of the ball. So both offensive and defensive lines are going to be by committee.”

Berryville will open the season on Sept. 5 at Mountain View.
