The Berryville Bobcats got their fourth consecutive victory to open the 2024-25 season on Thursday, Nov. 21, scoring the final three points of the game to beat Valley Springs 60-59.
Junior Peyton Smith made two free throws with 7.7 seconds left to give the Bobcats the lead, then a Valley Springs layup rolled off the rim just before the final buzzer.
Smith scored 32 points to lead Berryville, which recorded its second one-point victory of the season. Smith scored 28 points after halftime, including 19 in the third quarter. The Bobcats outscored Valley Springs 25-12 in that quarter to turn a four-point halftime deficit into a 43-34 lead. But the Tigers rallied in the fourth quarter and forced overtime with a late basket.
In the extra period, Berryville grabbed the lead when sophomore Mason Zogleman found classmate CT Hicks open in the lane for an easy layup at the 1:32 mark. Valley Springs tied it 13 seconds later with two free throws. After Bobcats sophomore Hudson Norris converted a free throw for a 58-57 lead with 1:11 remaining, Valley Springs made a driving layup to go in front 59-58 with 8.4 seconds left. But Smith was fouled on the inbounds play and hit nothing but net on two free throws to give the Bobcats the lead for good.
Smith made the go-ahead basket with four seconds left in Berryville’s 56-55 win at Cotter on Nov. 14.
Hicks added 11 points. On Tuesday, Nov. 19, Berryville won 57-37 at Eureka Springs as Smith scored 18 points and Hicks added 15.
Junior Kenner Leavell scored 12 points for Eureka Springs and sophomore Cole Wolfinbarger added 11.
Berryville hosted Greenland on Monday, Nov. 25, at Bobcat Arena.
