Bobcats Hold Their Own

First-year Berryville coach Macklin Chermak said he was pleased with what he saw from his team in last week’s scrimmage against Yellville-Summit.

The Panthers outscored the Bobcats 14-10 in the 32-minute scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 17, at Bobcat Stadium.

“I thought it was a really good start for us,” said Chermak, who was hired as the Bobcats’ head coach in late May. “Definitely, a lot of sloppiness, which there is in every first scrimmage. We’ve got a lot of things to clean up. Overall I think we came out pretty pleased.”

Junior quarterback Decimus Ruiz scored on a 4-yard run with 13 seconds left in the first half to cap an 80-yard touchdown drive and sophomore Andre Esparza added the extra point to give Berryville a 10-8 lead at halftime. Esparza had kicked a 26-yard field goal earlier for the game’s first points.

Ruiz set up his touchdown with a 20-yard run two plays earlier and also had a 10-yard completion to sophomore receiver Russell Conard on the scoring drive.

Ruiz alternated series at quarterback with sophomore Hunter Rankin.

“Decimus definitely showed that he is a second-year varsity player,” Chermak said. “He showed some veteranship. Hunter continued to show us that he can throw the ball a little bit, but he’s still raw. He’s still a sophomore, still a first-year varsity player. But we’re excited about both of those guys.

Approximately 26 players dressed out for the Bobcats, which Chermak said led to several players seeing more action than normal on both offense and defense.

“Most of our players won’t have to play that much on a normal Friday night,” he said.

Berryville will open the season on Friday, Sept. 1, hosting West Fork at Bobcat Stadium.
