When the Berryville Bobcats are playing well, they’re capable of scoring a lot of points in a hurry.
And the Bobcats played very well against Calico Rock in the Bergman Hoopsgiving Classic on Nov. 21.
Sparked by a 16-0 run early in the second quarter, Berryville rolled to an 80-57 victory over the Pirates and went into the Thanksgiving break on a high note.
Berryville made 15 three-pointers altogether, including five in the second quarter.
“We played extremely well,” Berryville coach Brent Compton said. “We shot the ball extremely well, especially from the threepoint line. We shot 40-something percent from three.”
The Bobcats also showed some grit, battling for rebounds and loose balls throughout the game.
“Our kids realize that we’re going to have to outwork people to have a chance to win,” Compton said. “And that’s just our mentality anyway. They’re good kids, hard workers, and they’ll do whatever it takes to try to get a win.”
Calico Rock hung with the Bobcats early, using its size and strength on the inside.
“It took us a minute to kind of get going,” Compton said. “They were strong and physical. It seems like almost every team we’ve played has been that way. And that’s probably going to be good for us leading into conference play here in a couple weeks.”
Berryville senior D.J. Colbert gave the Bobcats a little breathing room, sinking a three-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer for an 18-13 Berryville lead.
Calico Rock got a quick basket to start the second quarter, but then the Bobcats took over.
Senior Jake Wilson started Berryville’s run by driving inside for a basket. Then the Bobcats got back-to-back three-pointers from Colbert and senior Jack Dignan to push their lead to 26-15.
Colbert made two free throws with 4:57 left in the second quarter, then dropped in another three-pointer less than a minute later. Wilson’s three from the left baseline made it 34-15 with 3:30 remaining in the quarter.
After Calico Rock got a pair of baskets, Wilson found senior guard Nate Allen on a kickout pass for another Berryville three-pointer. Wilson then scored in transition and added another basket on a drive inside with 34.5 seconds left in the first half.
Wilson had 12 of his game-high 30 points in the second quarter. Colbert finished with 24 points, including 14 in the first half.
After leading 41-23 at halftime, Berryville extended its lead to to 20 on Colbert’s three-pointer from the left wing midway through the third quarter. Dignan’s three from the right baseline made it 55-34 with 3:16 left in the quarter and the Bobcats led by at least 18 the rest of the way.
Colbert finished with six three-pointers, while Allen made four three-pointers and scored 14 points for Berryville. Wilson had three three-pointers, while Dignan made two and scored six points. Freshman Dale Nagtalon also hit a three-pointer for the Bobcats.
Berryville (4-1) will play its first home game of the season on Tuesday, hosting Green Forest at Bobcat Arena.
