Bobcats head south to face Star City

Posted

Berryville coach Grant Hutson says there are no moral victories for the Bobcats, so there was no satisfaction in a hardfought loss at Clarksville in the district tournament championship game on Thursday, May 4.

After neither team scored in regulation or two overtime periods, Clarksville converted one more penalty kick than Berryville to win the game.

“We’ve kind of instilled in the kids that competing and battling is a good thing,” Hutson said. “But we don’t want a moral victory. Our kids are competing to win.”

But now, the Clarksville game is in the past, as Berryville prepares to take on Star City at 3 p.m. Thursday at Little Rock Mills High School in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament.

“We’re excited,” Hutson said. “We’ve been preparing for this all year. Now it’s finally time for us to see, hopefully, all the hard work pay off.”

Berryville will be without one of its top offensive threats after senior striker David Tapia suffered a season-ending injury in the district tournament.

“We have a mentality of ‘next man up,’ and all the kids understand it,” Hutson said. “They’re hurting for David. But our goal is still what it was at the beginning of the year, and we’ve got to have that ‘next man up’ mentality to be successful.”
