Bobcats hard at work in Year 2 under Chermak

Posted

Macklin Chermak didn’t have much time to get settled in as the Berryville Bobcats’ head coach last year.

Chermak was hired just before 2023 spring practice began for the Bobcats and didn’t have a chance to implement much of his system before the season began.

“There was no time to set a standard, until the season had started,” Chermak said Monday, July 22.

This summer, Chermak sees a program moving in the right direction.

“Things are looking good,” Chermak said. “We’re getting towards the end of summer ball and we’ve had more kids in the summer this year than we had last year, working hard and putting the time in.”

Berryville went 3-7 last season, including a dramatic last-second victory over West Fork in Chermak’s debut. Several starters return this fall, led by senior quarterback Decimus Ruiz.

Ruiz, a dangerous runner, is entering his third season as a starter.

“He can play multiple positions,” Chermak said. “He’s a very versatile guy.”

Senior Cooper Summers and junior Andre Esparza can both play out of the backfield or the slot for the Bobcats. Juniors Russell Conard and Kale Smith are capable receivers and also will play defensive back. Chermak said Smith is “probably our fastest guy.”

Berryville’s offensive line will be more experienced this fall.

“It’s a pretty much a full group of starters coming back this year,” Chermak said. “We did makeshift a little last year, so it’s not like they were all full starters last year, but everyone on the offensive line this year has at least started at some point last year.”

Berryville will play a benefit game at Lamar on Aug. 22 before opening the regular season at home against Mountain View on Sept. 6.
