Bobcats can’t keep up with Pioneers

The high-scoring Gentry Pioneers dominated their game against visiting Berryville on Friday, Sept. 29, ringing up a 54-7 victory.

But that doesn’t mean there weren’t some bright spots for the Bobcats.

“Some good things came out of it,” said first-year Berryville coach Macklin Chermak. “Defensively, we had to move a lot of guys around and so they kind of struggled in their new positions but did OK. We saw some bright spots there.”

Offensively, Berryville moved the ball at times. The biggest highlight of the night for the Bobcats came at the close of the first half, when senior Zane Gentry threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Kale Smith to cut into a 26-0 Gentry lead.

“He launched one to the end zone and got a touchdown,” Chermak said of Gentry, who took over when junior starting quarterback Decimus Ruiz left the game with an injury.

Ruiz is expected to play this week, Chermak said.

Berryville will host Elkins, one of the preseason favorites in the 4A-1, for Homecoming on Friday night at Bobcat Stadium.

Elkins (5-0, 2-0) is averaging 51 points a game and is coming off a 63-0 home victory over Huntsville.

“They’re an extremely good team,” Chermak said. “They’ll be tough for us to handle. But no excuses. We’re going to go out there and give it everything we’ve got.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
