The Berryville Bobcats didn’t come out ready to play against the Shirley Blue Devils in the semifinals of First Service Bank Classic on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Clinton, and for that they learned a painful lesson.
Two nights later, the Bobcats showed the focus they had been missing.
Berryville bounced back from a 55-25 loss to Class A Shirley to defeat Marshall 65-45 in the tournament’s third-place game.
“It was night and day difference,” Berryville coach Brent Compton said. “You know, we couldn’t have played any worse on Tuesday and we played real well on Thursday. So Wednesday’s practice, I think, was kind of a wakeup call.”
Compton said the coaching staff “turned up the heat a little bit” in practice.
“I’ve got great kids and they know we didn’t play well,” he said. “They know that they weren’t mentally focused going into the game. They saw the name on the schedule and they thought ‘we can just show up and win.’ And that just wasn’t the case. We learned a lesson, thankfully, that we should have already known, but at least it happened early in the season.”
Berryville led Marshall 37-23 at halftime, making nine three-pointers in the first half. Five of those, including four in the second quarter alone, came from senior D.J. Colbert, who finished with seven threes and a game-high 25 points.
“D.J., when he shoots it, you feel good every time,” Compton said. “It might have hit the net a couple times. It was just going straight through without hitting anything.”
Senior Jake Wilson added 20 points for the Bobcats. Berryville (3-1) played Calico Rock on Monday in the Bergman Classic.
