Bobcats blank Magazine, 21-0

Posted

The Berryville Bobcats earned their second victory of the 2023 season on Friday, Sept. 15, shutting out Magazine 21-0 on the Rattlers’ home field.

Berryville improved to 2-1 under first-year head coach Macklin Chermak.

“They’re a smaller school,” Chermak said of Class 2A Magazine. “But I thought our defense did really well adjusting to all the different formations they try to do. We’ve got to work on tackling. The offense struggled a little bit to get going but once they found a rhythm, they were able to move it a little bit. Our passing game opened up a little bit, which was good to see, but we’ve got to get back to the running game getting a rhythm again.”

Junior quarterback Decimus Ruiz was involved in all three Berryville touchdowns, running for two scores and passing to sophomore Andre Esparza for the other.

Berryville will open conference play this week, hosting Ozark at Bobcat Stadium on Friday, Sept. 22.

The Hillbillies, who finished second in the 4A-1 last season and reached the second round of the state playoffs, are 2-1 this fall. Ozark, which is coming off a 28-7 home win against Charleston, is averaging nearly 33 points a game.

“Big, physical, wellcoached,” Chermak said of the Hillbillies. “They’re fast, much faster than you’d think they’d be. Their quarterback is very impressive. That’s probably the guy we’re going to focus on the most. … It’s going to be definitely a challenge of physicality that we’ve not seen yet this year.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium.
