Big win at Prairie Grove extends Bobcats’ streak to 9

Posted

Make that nine in a row.

The Berryville Bobcats’ winning streak continued last week as the Bobcats picked up a pair of important victories in 4A-1 conference play.

First, the Bobcats showed off their three-point shooting touch in a 67-49 victory over Pea Ridge on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Bobcat Arena. Then Berryville went on the road to avenge one of its two conference losses this season with a 60-52 win at Prairie Grove on Thursday, Jan. 22.

“We didn’t play perfect,” Berryville coach Brent Compton said after the win at Prairie Grove. “We played three really good quarters. The kids played extremely hard the whole game. The one thing they did great the entire game, for four quarters, was they executed our defensive plan. That kept us in it early when we kind of had a lull on offense.”

Prairie Grove outscored Berryville 14-11 in the first quarter before the Bobcats and led 28-24 at halftime before the Bobcats took a two-point lead at the end of the third quarter. Berryville outscored Prairie Grove 36-24 in the second half.

“In the second half, we played real well and put it away at the end,” Compton said.

Junior John Butler helped keep Berryville close early, as well, scoring seven of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter.

“John was the best player on the floor,” Compton said. “He definitely ignited our team from the very beginning. His energy and toughness had everybody going.”

Junior CT Hicks and senior Peyton Smith added 11 points each and junior Carson McMellon scored 10 for the Bobcats.

The win over Pea Ridge was a threepoint party for the Bobcats. Berryville made nine shots from behind the arc, including five from McMellon, who led the Bobcats with 15 points. Junior Hudson Norris added 11 points for Berryville, while Smith and junior Mason Zogleman each scored 10.

Zogleman came off the bench to hit two three-pointers and score eight points in the second quarter, when the Bobcats outscored the Blackhawks 23-12 to turn a five-point deficit into a six-point halftime lead. Berryville increased its margin to 14 by the end of the third quarter.

Altogether, six Bobcats scored in double figures at least once in Berryville’s two games last week.

“That’s what we want,” Compton said. “We want a team. And when you have a team, you can’t key on one or two guys, it just makes you so much harder to prepare for. And we’re getting there game by game, day by day.

The Bobcats (18-6, 6-2 4A-1) will play two conference home games at Bobcat Arena on back-to-back days this week, hosting Gravette on Friday, Jan. 30, and conference-leading Shiloh Christian on Saturday, Jan. 31, in a game that was rescheduled from Tuesday, Jan. 27, because of road conditions.

Saturday’s games will start at 1 p.m. with junior high girls, followed by junior high boys at 2:15 p.m., high school girls at 3:30 p.m. and high school boys at 4:50 p.m.

In addition, Berryville’s seventh- grade and junior high games vs. Prairie Grove, which were postponed last week, will be played on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Those games will start will seventh-grade girls at 4 p.m., followed by seventh-grade boys at 5 p.m., junior high girls at 6 p.m. and junior high boys at 7:15 p.m.
