BHS Drama Department to present 'Steel Magnolias'

Posted

Meleia Lewis, Berryville High School theater teacher, selected playwright Robert Harling’s play “Steel Magnolias” as this year’s spring production for the Drama Department.

The play takes place in Truvy’s Beauty Spot and is based on Harling’s life growing up in Natchitoches, La., though he used a fictional setting for the play. Lewis explained that most people are probably more familiar with the movie of the same name, but it was originally a play, eventually making it to Broadway. The play is mostly an all-female cast of nine, with one male student doing an offstage reading.

“I wanted to showcase the talented girls we have,” Lewis said.

The BHS Bobcat Drama production will be presented in the BHS Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13 (featuring the understudies in selected roles).

Other performances with the primary cast are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 14-15, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 16. Tickets for the performances are available in advance at https://onthestage.tickets/show/berryville-high-school for $5 each (plus handling fees), or at the door for $8. Doors will open 30 minutes before each performance.

The play also will be presented during school hours for fifth-grade and high school students.
