BHS Bobcat Drama to present ‘Steel Magnolias’

Posted

BHS Bobcat Drama is hard at work on its spring play production of Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias. Though many are familiar with the 1989 film of the same title, the play came first, with its premiere in 1987 at the WPA Theatre in New York City. Later that same year it moved to an off-Broadway production at the Lortel Theatre. There would also be a 1989 production on London’s West End, and then in 2005, a Broadway production, starring Delta Burke as Truvy. In 2012, the play became a television film with an all African-American cast that included Queen Latifah and Phylicia Rashad.

Set in Truvy’s Beauty Spot in fictional Chinquapin Parish, La., the play centers around the friendships among several of the ladies of the town, including the former mayor’s wife, Clairee Belcher; her lifelong (and sometimes hard-to-love) friend, Ouiser Boudreaux; sassy salon owner Truvy Jones; her new assistant Annelle Dupuy, M’Lynn Eatenton and her daughter Shelby. As the play opens, all are gathered to get Shelby and her mother ready for Shelby’s wedding. It soon becomes apparent that there is a medical issue of concern with Shelby. She is a diabetic, but has no intention of letting that stop her from living her life. In two acts that cover some three years, we see her illness take its toll, and the bond amongst these ladies grow stronger, thus the title, Steel Magnolias.

Starring in the school’s production include Alyvia Scroggins as Truvy, Paige Thurman as Annelle, Aleena Pittman as Clairee, Sadie Sharp as Shelby, Jarica Phillips as M’Lynn, and Grayson Morrell as Ouiser. Understudies include Faith McKinney, Jerry Carter and Autumn Bigham. Stage nanager for the production is Alejandra Calvillo and assistant stage manager is Ashlee Bills. A host of other students are working on various crews, from set construction to props, costumes, hair and makeup, photography, lighting and sound to house management.

The BHS Bobcat Drama production will be presented in the BHS Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13 (featuring the understudies in selected roles). Other performances with the primary cast are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 15, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 16. Tickets for the performances are available in advance at https://onthestage.tickets/show/ berryville-high-school/63f928e8d-5ba9202f6ce3992/tickets for $5 each (plus handling fees), or at the door for $8.
