Berryville High School Bobcat Drama will present the sentimental comedy, “The Curious Savage” by John Patrick, at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, and Saturday, Nov. 15, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov.16, in the BHS Performing Arts Center.
The play is set at The Cloisters, a sanatorium in Massachusetts, and centers on Mrs. Ethel Savage, a new resident/patient at the facility, due to what her three stepchildren, Senator Titus Savage, six-time married Lily Belle, and Judge Samuel Savage, refer to as her reckless spending of the large fortune her late husband has left her. Her three stepchildren, Senator Titus Savage, sixtime married Lily Belle Savage, and Judge Samuel Savage have had her committed to The Cloisters.
In the opening of the play, we meet other residents/patients, Fairy May, who is lovable, but tends to exaggerate for effect; Florence, who initially seems a bit too “normal” and sophisticated to be in need of mental help; Hannibal, who loves to “play” the violin and spout off random statistics; Jeff, who loves to read, but does so while holding his right hand on his face to cover unseen war scars; and Mrs. Patty, who only speaks on her own terms, and sits for long periods at an easel. Before long, we are introduced to Miss Willie, a compassionate and efficient nurse and assistant at The Cloisters; and Dr. Emmett, the gentle and understanding resident physician.
As the play progresses, we see everyone’s true selves, some more appealing than others; and some more real than others still.
Members of the BHS cast are: Auna Herrera as Fairy May, Molly Staats as Florence, Corban Turpen as Hannibal, Reece Williams as Jeff; Dalielah Kesler as Mrs. Patty; Keily Diaz as Miss Willie; A.C. Calvillo as Dr. Emmett; Andrew Griesenauer as Titus Savage; Sydnee Carlson as Lily Belle Savage, Manuel Arrizon as Samuel Savage; and Aubrey Lee as Mrs. Ethel Savage.
