BHS Bobcat Drama presents ‘Radium Girls’

Posted

Berryville High School Bobcat Drama will present “Radium Girls” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 11, and Monday, April 15 with a matinee performance at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14.

The play tells the story of teenage girls and young women who worked in dial factories in the United State in the late 1910s through the mid-1920s. Proud to do their part to contribute to the war effort, and then to make a living for themselves, the young women had no idea what the future held – because of the paint compound, infused with radium (then thought to be a cureall for various medical issues) that they used to create glow-in-thedark watch and clock faces and altimeters. Before long, they had become victims of the very dangerous effects of radium, many developing severe anemia, as well as bone malformations and even bone cancer. They fought the system, suing their employers. While their efforts offered too little, too late for the affected women, they helped to pave the way for safer industrial workplaces.

Cast members include Averie Engel, Andrew Griesenauer, Faith McKinney, Sadie Sharp and Paige Thurman.

Tickets can be purchased online for $6.90 including fees at https://onthestage. tickets/show/berryville-high-school or at the door for $8.
