BHS Bobcat Drama preparing to present ‘The Curious Savage’

Posted

Berryville High School Bobcat Drama is in the midst of rehearsals for its fall theatre production of “The Curious Savage.” The play is scheduled to be presented for the public at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14, and 15 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, in the BHS Performing Arts Center.

The play is a sweet comedy by playwright John Patrick. Set at The Cloisters, a sanatorium in Massachusetts, the play centers on Mrs. Ethel Savage, an incoming resident/patient at the facility, and her alleged reckless spending of the immense fortune her late husband left her. Her three stepchildren, Senator Titus Savage, six-time married Lily Belle Savage and Judge Samuel Savage, are responsible for her placement at The Cloisters.

As the play opens, we meet other residents/ patients, including the loveable but exaggerative Fairy May, who has a tendency to embellish her life stories; Florence, who initially seems a bit too “normal” and sophisticated to be at the establishment; Hannibal, who loves to “play” the violin and wax poetic about statistics; Jeff, who loves to read, but does so while holding his right hand on his face to cover unseen war scars; and Mrs. Patty, who only speaks on her own terms and sits for long periods at an easel. Before long, we are introduced to Miss Willie, a compassionate and efficient nurse and assistant at The Cloisters; and Dr. Emmett, the gentle and understanding resident physician.

As the play progresses, we see everyone’s true selves, some more appealing than others; and some more real than others still.

Members of the BHS cast are: Auna Herrera as Fairy May, Molly Staats as Florence, Corban Turpen as Hannibal, Reece Williams as Jeff; Dalielah Kesler as Mrs. Patty; Keily Diaz as Miss Willie; A.C. Calvillo as Dr. Emmett; Andrew Griesenauer as Titus Savage; Sydnee Carlson as Lily Belle Savage, Manuel Arrizon as Samuel Savage; and Aubrey Lee as Mrs. Ethel Savage.

Student director for the production is Paige Thurman; alongside stage manager Sage Tresler. A large number of students will be working on the various production crews .
