When Berryville High School wrestling coach Ryan Whetham says the Bobcats are on a roll, he’s not kidding.
The Bobcats had an impressive performance over the weekend in the Diamond State Duals at Springdale Har-Ber High School, which included teams from Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas and Florida.
Berryville picked up impressive victories over Fort Smith Southside and Springdale, both Class 6A schools.
“We wrestled really, really well,” Whetham said. “So, yeah, we’re rolling. We’re doing really, really good.”
Berryville also had a strong showing in the girls division, led by a second-place finish from Catherine Paz in the 155-pound weight class. Paz won six of her seven matches, including five by pin. Other wrestlers competing for the Lady Bobcats were Marcella Gray (115), Sage Griffin (130) and Gelina Pham (110). Griffin won her match against a wrestler from Gardner-Edgerton High School in Kansas by pin.
“They had a really good weekend wrestling, got to see a bunch of competition that was really good,” Whetham said.
On the boys side, the Bobcats’ Alex Deleon (190 pounds), Zydon Ballard (215) and Jarrod Changus (285) all won their matches against Springdale by pin, while T.J. Wolfe (120), Denys Roca (126), Brayden Reeves (144) and Ocean Mullins (150) had victories by pin against Fort Smith Southside.
Mullins, Keegan Morgan (165), Ethan Pierce (175) and Changus all won matches by pin against Shiloh Christian, which beat the Bobcats by two points.
Mullins won his match by pin against Cassville, while Wolfe won by pin against Fort Gibson, Okla. Against Hot Springs Lakeside, Berryville’s Junior Valencia won by pin at 113 pounds, while Joe Abreau won by pin at 138 pounds, Cade Decker won by decision at 157 pounds and Easton Elliott won by decision at 285 pounds.
Reeves won against Sallisaw, Okla., while Mullins and Ballard both won by pin.
In the Bobcats’ first match against Springdale, Reeves, Decker, Deleon and Ballard all won by pin.
“They’re doing really, really good,” Whetham said of the Berryville boys.
A key in team competition is being able to field wrestlers in as many weight classes as possible. Whetham said the Bobcats are doing well in that regard.
“The only weight we’re missing is 106,” he said. “We’re going to be pretty tough to beat, maybe not this year but next year. We’ve got a bunch of sophomores and freshmen that are coming through that are looking really, really good.”
Berryville is scheduled to wrestle against Southside on Tuesday, Jan. 7, in Fort Smith before competing at Gentry on Thursday, Jan. 9
