The city of Berryville will not be receiving a $745,932 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy that was announced in February, Mayor Tim McKinney said Friday, March 28.
The grant, which had been awarded to study advanced recycling and fuel conversion technologies in an effort to address municipal solid waste and landfill constraints in Northwest Arkansas, was among those wiped out by widespread federal budget cuts.
“That’s gone,” McKinney said. “I don’t think that’s going to happen. Other than that, I think we’re just like everybody else, just kind of sitting back wondering what the heck they’re going to do next.”
In other news, McKinney said the city is working with the state highway department on aesthetic and safety improvements around the Berryville Public Square, but some parking spaces may be lost as part of the project. A representative from the state highway department is expected to attend the next meeting of the Berryville City Council, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at City Hall.
