Voters in a special election overwhelmingly approved a 15-year extension of the city of Berryville’s existing half-cent sales and use tax on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Final but unofficial results announced on election night showed 54 votes in favor of the tax extension and 15 votes against.
Several ballot issues on bonds to be paid with revenue from the tax passed by similar margins.
The Carroll County Election Commission met Monday, May 19, and certified the election results.
The tax had been set to expire on Sept. 30, 2030. The extension approved by voters means it will now expire on Sept. 30, 2045.
At Mayor Tim McKinney’s request, the Berryville City Council pproved an ordinance to extend the tax at the council’s regular eeting on Feb. 25, but the extension required voter approval.
McKinney told the city council that extending the tax would allow the city to issue bonds in order o finance various improvement projects.
McKinney said Berryville’s sales tax would remain low compared to other cities in Northwest Arkansas
