Berryville to induct 5 into Athletic Hall of Fame

The Berryville School District and Hall of Fame Board are pleased to reveal the newest slate of inductees into the Berryville Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Berryville Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025 inductees are: Gordon Carr, Allen Gustin, Dean Lee, Ricky Sugg and Beverly Webb.

“This distinguished class features individuals who have left a lasting legacy at Berryville High School, in our community and beyond. These outstanding individuals have demonstrated years of hard work, excellence, dedication and sportsmanship throughout their athletic and professional careers,” said Owen Powell, superintendent of the Berryville School District. “Their achievements continue to inspire future generations of athletes. Please help us recognize, celebrate and honor these inductees as they connect the past with the present.”

The 2025 Hall of Fame activities are scheduled for Sept.19 and 20. The inductees will be introduced during halftime of the Berryville/Yellville- Summit football game on Friday, Sept. 19, at Bobcat Stadium. On Saturday, Sept. 20, a pancake breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. in the Berryville High School cafeteria before the formal Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in the Performing Arts Center beginning at 9 a.m. All events are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Brief career highlights of each inductee are listed below:

Gordon Carr

Gordon Carr went to Berryville High School from 1952-55 and was active in all sports. During his senior year he had 44 points in a basketball game at St. Joe, which caught the eye of a scout from Arkansas Tech at the game, and Carr was offered a full scholarship to Arkansas Tech at Russellville. While at Tech he was a four-year basketball letterman with two of the teams going to the NAIA Tournament.

Allen Gustin

Allen Gustin was a four-year All District football player and high-point track performer. During his senior year, he rushed for 1,975 yards, scored 22 touchdowns, and averaged 232 yards on 25 carries a game. He also led the state in points scored, was chosen by the Arkansas Democrat as the MVP in Class A football and played in the Arkansas All-Star game. He later played football and ran track at Arkansas Tech and then spent 41 years coaching at Harrison and Yellville-Summit coaching. where he coached multiple state track champions.

Dean Lee

Dean Lee was an all-round athlete in multiple sports at Berryville and was nominated to play in both the Arkansas football and basketball All-Star games. He attended college at Henderson State University, where he played on two NAIA national runner-up basketball teams while also lettering in baseball and tennis. He had coaching stints at Malvern and Henderson State University before going into college administration, were he served as director of athletics at Arkansas State University and Arkansas Tech, was vice president of the Razorback Foundation and associate athletic drector at Oklahoma State University.

Ricky Sugg

Ricky Sugg was an outstanding athlete who quarterbacked the football team and was a high school all-star basketball player in 1962. He played basketball for the University of Arkansas and was an All-Southwest Conference player during 1965 and 1966. He was the first Razorback basketball player to ever score more than 40 points in a game, scoring 41 points against Centenary College.

Beverly Webb

Beverly Webb graduated BHS in 1972 when girls athletics didn’t exist. She attended Arkansas Tech University, where she played tennis and started in the first volleyball game she ever saw. She later coached at Alma High School and at Arkansas Tech before becoming an assistant basketball coach at Arkansas State University. She later became the head coach of the ASU Division I program and was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year.

The inaugural class of inductees selected in 2024 consisted of former coaches Jack Edens, Ronnie Clark, Joe Mills and Jo Ann Clark, along with former student-athlete Tommy Ginn.
