Did you know that children as young as 11 years old are being trafficked for sex in Northwest Arkansas? It is scary to think this could be happening here in Carroll County, but sadly it is.
Paula Sell, a volunteer with Into the Light, will be presenting an informational program titled “Not On Our Watch!” at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 8, at the Berryville Library located at 104 Spring St. The program will focus on educating more people about this issue.
Into the Light, a non-profit organization based in Northwest Arkansas, is committed to seeing an end to the sex trafficking of children in Arkansas by serving victims with prevention, intervention, long-term advocacy and 24hour crisis response. In 2022, Into the Light provided refuge and treatment for 99 minor victims in North Central and Northwest Arkansas. One hundred sixty-three victims were met with crisis intervention assisting them with an immediate safety plan and strategies to make them less vulnerable to the dangers typically associated with sexual exploitation, including violence, suicide, drugs, alcohol, and child pornography. To date, Into the Light has trained more than 500 individuals to understand, identify and support children who have been victimized by human trafficking.
Paula Sell is one of these trained volunteers.
“Every time I hear about, read about or think about the fact that children are being sex trafficked in NW Arkansas, my heart breaks,” Sell said. “I could no longer just say ‘that is so awful.’ For too long I had done nothing, mainly because I didn’t think there was anything I could do. I found in doing research and reading about Into the Light, there are things each of us can do to help prevent and fight this evil and protect our children.”
Into the Light relies on community partners to aid in the early identification and recovery of trafficked children. The best way to join the fight to protect our children is to become informed.
