Berryville Library to celebrate National Friends of Libraries Week in October

Posted

The Berryville Library will be celebrating its Friends of the Library group during the week of Oct. 19-25 as part of the 20th annual National Friends of Libraries Week.

The Friends of the Berryville Library was re-established in 2017 and has helped lead the Berryville Library Building Project, which has raised more than $3.7 million to date. The new library is now under construction at 207 S. Springfield. The Friends are continuing to raise funds for furnishing the new library. The Friends of the Berryville Library, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization with a Platinum Seal of Transparency on GuideStar.

Comprising more than 180 community members, the Friends advocate for and support the Berryville Library. Their financial donations and volunteer efforts help enhance the library’s appearance and provide supplies and materials that the library would otherwise be unable to afford. These include craft supplies available for teens to use whenever they drop in, and hotspots with unlimited data that community members can borrow free of charge for a week at a time. They also host author talks, a Christmas bake sale and various fundraising and friendraising events throughout the year. Their next fundraiser will be a Thanksgiving pickup pie sale.

“What an exciting year to be the president of the Friends of the Berryville Library,” said president Elaine Floyd. “To be able to fulfill our promise to the community to build a new library would not have been possible without the overwhelming support and generosity of the community!”

Efforts to improve public library facilities have been underway for more than 30 years. With no local tax money available to support these efforts, the Friends of the Berryville Library launched a capital campaign on April 1, 2021. According to Joe Scott, building committee chair and Berryville Library Advisory Board member, “it has definitely been a labor of love for many in the community. We have weathered storms along the way, but everyone remained committed to working hard to make this dream a reality.”

The new library is expected to open in the late spring or summer of 2026.

“Our Friends have contributed so much of their time, talent, and treasure. They all deserve to be celebrated not only during this designated week but throughout the year,” said library director Julie Hall.

In addition to individuals and families, the Friends of the Berryville Library have more than 38 Business Friends, local businesses that support their fundraising efforts and help with efforts to improve library services for all.

To learn more about joining the Friends and supporting the Berryville Library, please call or visit the Berryville Library at 104 Spring St. The Friends are always looking for bakers, volunteers, and, when moving day arrives, extra hands to help pack up and get into the new library. It’s not too late to be a part of this story!

National Friends of Libraries Week is coordinated by United for Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. United for Libraries supports those who govern, promote, advocate, and fundraise for libraries, assembling library trustees, advocates, Friends groups, library foundations, and others into a partnership that creates a powerful force for libraries.
