Posted

Berryville Fire Chief Shannon Chester has retired from his position after more than 30 years with the fire department and more than a decade as chief.

Chester submitted his resignation, which was effective Oct. 1, in a Sept. 19 letter to Mayor Tim McKinney.

“Dear Mayor McKinney,” Chester’s letter says. “Please accept my resignation from Chief of the Berryville Fire Department, effective October 1, 2024.

“It has been an honor being a part of the Berryville Fire Department for the past 32 years and serving the last 11 years as Chief. Thank you, Mayor McKinney, City Council, Sally & Jay for going above and beyond helping me when needed and making my job easier.

“Thank you for the opportunity to serve as Chief. It has been a pleasure.”

McKinney read Chester’s letter to the Berryville City Council during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 1. He said he expects to name a new chief soon.

In other business, the council approved three readings of an ordinance rezoning a parcel of land on West Freeman Avenue from R-1 Single Family Residential to C-2 Highway Commercial to accommodate a planned Tractor Supply Company store. The council also approved an ordinance establishing millage rates for the calendar year 2025.

The next regular meeting of the Berryville City Council is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at City Hall.
