Berryville board OKs use of grant funds for server upgrades

The Berryville School District is taking advantage of a grant program for some server upgrades at its middle school and high school campuses.

At its regular monthly meeting held Monday, March 17, the Berryville School Board approved an IK Network Solutions proposal for an E-Rate, according to superintendent Owen Powell.

“We’re going to upgrade some of our servers on our east campus, which is the middle school and high school,” Powell said. “E-Rate is basically a federal grant and they pay for 80 percent of certain upgrades to technology.”

The total project will cost a little more than $130,000, Powell said.

“And we will be out of pocket about $40,000 to upgrade those network servers,” he said. “It’s probably 10 years plus since we’ve upgraded those servers, and with technology, if it’s more than five or six years old, it’s a dinosaur.”

The board approved two school choice requests for students coming into the district and also OK’d a contract with Arkansas Children’s Hospital for audiology testing services, Powell said.

“They actually come on site and do testing,” he said. “I believe we pay them about $700, $750 a day whenever they come in and do the on-site testing.”

Springfield Grocer and Hiland Dairy were part of winning child nutrition bids approved by the board, which also OK’d a resolution regarding unopposed school board candidates Linda Winkle and Tyler Ashworth.

“We had two board members that were up to re-run and they are running unopposed, so that was just a resolution saying that we don’t have to open up the polls,” Powell said.

In personnel actions, the board approved the resignations or retirements of teacher and coach Tanner Theobald, high school teacher Gregory Brookhouser, elementary teacher Kaylan Ellis, middle school teacher Eryn Landrum, behavioral and academic interventionist Jill Jones, elementary teacher Brenda Jones, special education paraprofessional Tyler Brown, bookkeeper and child nutrition director Summer Williamson, Amanda Pittman with Bobcat Academy, bus driver Hilary Parks, special education paraprofessional and bus driver Sara Summers and migrant paraprofessional Gayla Swofford.

New hires OK’d were elementary special education teacher Tamara Long and Nancy Pruente and Ravyn Whitson at Bobcat Academy.

The board also approved contract renewals for certified staff for the 2025-2026 school year.

Enrollment heading into spring break was 1,726, the superintendent added.

“I feel like we’ve had a real, real good school year up to this point heading into spring break,” Powell said. “I know everybody’s ready to have a little down time. I think the teachers and students, everybody is ready for a break.”
