Basketball conference realignment hits hard

Posted

The Arkansas Activities Association has announced the basketball conference alignments for the 20262028 classification cycle, and the news isn’t good for Carroll County teams.

The 4A-1, which has included eight teams in the most recent classification cycle, will expand into two six-team divisions.

Berryville and Green Forest will be joined in the new 4A-1 East by Harrison, which is dropping back to Class 4A after spending the past few years in 5A. Also included in the 4A-1 East are Clarksville, Ozark and Pottsville — all traditionally strong basketball schools, especially on the boys side.

Ozark eliminated Berryville from the regional tournament in February.

While Berryville and Green Forest will compete in the 4A-1 East, five other schools that had been in the eight-team conference will now play in the 4A-1 West. Those schools are Gentry, Gravette, Huntsville, Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove. Shiloh Christian, which went undefeated in conference play each of the past two seasons, will now compete in Class 5A, while Elkins moves up from Class 3A to play in the 4A-1 West.

Eureka Springs will remain in the 2A-1. The conference also will include County Line, Decatur, Johnson County Westside, Life Way Christian, Mountainburg and Ozark Catholic, as well as the boys team from Haas Hall Academy in Rogers.
