Local high school basketball fans have become accustomed to a special gift right after Christmas for the past decade and a half — the annual CS Bank Holiday Hoops tournament at Bobcat Arena.
The tournament returns for its 15th year starting Thursday, Dec. 26, with a total of 16 boys and girls teams — 15 from Arkansas and one from Missouri. Each team is guaranteed three games in as many days, with the championship games on Saturday, Dec. 28.
In addition to Berryville, the boys bracket includes teams from Bauxite, De Queen, Green Forest, Heber Springs, Mountain View, Star City and West Side Greers Ferry.
The girls bracket includes Berryville, De Queen, Green Forest, Heber Springs, Mayflower, Mountain View, Viola and Crane, Mo.
Berryville boys coach Brent Compton, who also serves as the Bobcats’ athletic director, said he expects to see some outstanding basketball.
“I believe as a whole, it’s probably the best field we’ve had,” Compton said. “I’ve said that a few times. On the girls side, we’ve got two really, really, really good teams in De Queen, which has two kids already signed, and Mountain View, which is a young team but they’re loaded.”
On the boys side, Compton pointed out Star City, which he said is “supposed to be just crazy athletic.”
“All the rest of the teams are just solid,” he said.
Because the tournament begins the day after Christmas in order to be finished on Saturday and because of the travel involved, Berryville’s teams are playing earlier than usual on the first day of the tournament. Berryville’s boys tip off at 11:20 a.m. Thursday against Mountain View, while the Berryville girls take on Heber Springs at 3:20 p.m.
“We had to do it a little different, just to accommodate our teams,” Compton said. “We just didn’t have a choice, to be able to accommodate our teams, plus seed it how we feel like is right and fair. And that’s why we’re continuing to have a good tournament because we try to do those things.”
Green Forest’s boys play Star City at 4:40 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, while the Green Forest girls follow at 6 p.m. against De Queen.
