Angels Among Us

Posted

The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Berryville and some local children will have a merry Christmas thanks to the community’s generosity.

The Berryville Community Center’s annual Angel Tree program is under way, and everyone is invited to visit the community center and pick an angel — or two — from the tree. More than 100 children are represented on the tree.

“We serve the Berryville School District,” said Berryville parks director Renee Allison. “The counselors from the school send out the papers to the families that they feel like are in need, and we collect them. We have almost 40 families that we’re serving. So we have lots of kids, lots of availability.”

Ornaments on the tree represent the “angels.” The colored hearts on the ornaments indicate each child’s age. Other details including gender, needs and wants and the number of siblings are included on the backs of each ornament.

Those who select angels are asked to limit their spending to a maximum of about $100 and four gifts per child — “something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read.” Unwrapped gifts are due at the community center by Saturday, Dec. 10. Participants can also bring cash donations to the community center and staff will do the shopping for you.

“We do send the gifts home unwrapped so that the parents have a part in the gift giving,” Allison said. “The parents will be wrapping the presents for the children. So everything comes to us unwrapped. That way we can see what what each sibling has gotten and balance it from there. Cash donations are accepted here, and they will be given to our foundation, which is a 501(c)(3), so we can do a tax-deductible receipt for them.”

Allison said there are more children represented on the Angel Tree this year, but she said the Berryville community never fails to provide for each child.

“We have a very generous community,” she said. “We do. I’ve been amazed at how many people have already come to get angels this year. We do have more than we did last year. So we are again extending our need for more help. But we do have a generous community and things always seem to fall into place and the kids get what they need.”
