5-minute outburst lifts Lions over Bobcats

Posted

For a little more than 43 minutes of game time, Berryville’s Homecoming game against Gravette on Friday, Oct. 14, at Bobcat Stadium was essentially a standoff.

But a stretch of less than five minutes at the end of the first half made all the difference for the Lions, who scored three touchdowns in the final 4:50 of the second quarter and went on to beat the Bobcats 35-13.

“The kids gave great effort,” Berryville coach Bryan Hutson said. “Take away about a five-minute span, and we’re right there.”

Berryville (1-6, 0-4 4A1) trailed just 7-6 after running back Tun Oo found a crease behind blocks from right tackle Kaiden Flowers and slotback Ethan Williams and sprinted 65 yards for a touchdown with 5:54 left in the second quarter.

The Bobcats had Gravette in a third-and-9 situation on the Lions’ ensuing possession, but Gravette quarterback Rhett Hilger found a receiver open behind the Berryville secondary for a 70-yard touchdown pass that extended the Lions’ lead to 14-6 with 4:50 left in the half.

Hilger threw a 62yard touchdown pass on Gravette’s next possession, then closed out the half with another TD pass with less than a minute remaining as the Lions took a 28-6 lead.

“One of those was a blown coverage,” Hutson said of the Lions’ two long touchdown throws. “One kid thought we were in man and another kid thought we were in zone. The other one, their guy just made a good play. He double-moved us.”

Neither team scored in the third quarter. Gravette made it 35-6 on a short touchdown run by Hilger early in the fourth quarter.

Berryville didn’t let up in the closing minutes, with sophomore quarterback Decimus Ruiz scoring on a fourth-down keeper from a yard out with 5:23 remaining. Nay Blut’s extra point made it 35-13.

“The main thing I asked the kids was to give good effort,” Hutson said. “I didn’t feel like we had that (the previous week) against Elkins. The kids came out and played hard.”

Berryville’s first four conference opponents have a combined 4A-1 record of 14-2. This week, the Bobcats play at Huntsville, which is 0-4 in the conference and 0-7 overall. The Eagles have been outscored 297-74 this fall.

“Huntsville always plays Berryville really, really hard,” Hutson said. “They’re kind of in the same boat we are — they’ve played the top teams, too. So it’s hard to judge.”
