5 hurt in accident at GF Tyson plant

Posted

Five workers at a Tyson Food plant in Green Forest were injured — one seriously —during an accident Monday, May 9.

According to accounts, the accident involved an oil fire and explosion at the company’s par-fry plant on Tyson Drive.

“We’re investigating an accident that happened at our Green Forest, Arkansas, facility,” said Tyson Foods spokesman Kelly Hellbusch. “Unfortunately, five of our team members were injured. As always, we’re committed to supporting our team members and their families during this time, including providing food and hotel rooms and deploying chaplains to the facility. We appreciate the quick response of local first responders who assisted our team members.”

Hellbusch declined to offer any further comment on the accident, citing the ongoing investigation.

While the identities of those injured was not released, an fundraiser for one of the employees, Gloria Tapia, has been organized through GoFundMe.com by her sister, Ana Tapia.

According to Ana’s fundraising statement, the “tragic work accident” left Gloria with second- and third-degree burns to 40 percent of he body, including her face, arms, back, hands and legs.

Ana said the injuries will require skin-graft surgery.

“She is a single mother of 2 boys and is almost 5 months pregnant,” Ana wrote in her statement. “She was airlifted to a burn unit in Springfield. We ask of our community and friends to help us with expenses and bills as she will be hospitalized and cannot continue to work.

“Gloria is a beautiful person inside and out she is loving, generous and kind,” Ana continued. “She is the best of us and we ask you all to help our family in this terrifying situation. We ask to keep her and her children in your prayers as she recovers from this tragic accident. Anything helps and is appreciated beyond measure.”

As of 1:30 p.m. Monday, $2,660 had been raised through 62 donations.

Ana posted an update Friday, May 13, thanking those who had already donated.

“Surgery took 6 hours and she is in recovery,” Ana wrote. “Her road to recovery will be very long and painful. We can’t thank you all enough for all the support and donations for my sister She was able to finally see her boys yesterday, my sister is the boys #1 and has always been the only parent to support them.”

Tyson employs more than 2,600 workers in its three facilities in Carroll County, including more than 450 at the par-fry plant, which opened in 2017.
