Five Berryville High School wrestlers will compete in the state high school championships beginning Friday in Little Rock.
Zydon Ballard, Cade Decker, Ocean Mullins and TJ Wolfe qualified for the boys state tournament, while Catherine Paz will compete in the girls state tournament.
The Berryville wrestlers qualified based on their performance at the regional tournaments. The girls regional was held Saturday, Feb. 15, while the boys regional was held Saturday, Feb. 22.
Berryville coach Ryan Whetham said the Bobcats had several other wrestlers who almost qualified for state, as well — a good sign for a team loaded with freshmen and sophomores.
“We had about four kids that were one win away from getting in, and they fought like heck,” Whetham said. “It is what it is, but they were ninth-graders and 10th-graders. They’re still in the process of learning and getting better.”
Ballard and Mullins will be competing at state for the second consecutive year.
Whetham said the regional competition is getting more difficult as high school wrestling continues to grow in Northwest Arkansas.
“Our region is getting tougher and tougher,” he said.
The Berryville wrestlers will leave for Little Rock at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27. Supporters are encouraged to meet on the Berryville Public Square and cheer the team on as it passes.
