3rd-quarter run powers Lady Bobcats

Posted

The Berryville Lady Bobcats scored the first 13 points of the second half and went on to a 4432 victory over the Blue Eye Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Bobcat Arena.

After leading 18-16 at halftime, Berryville took control to open the second half behind the scoring of three sophomores.

Paige Thurman opened the second-half scoring with a basket from inside the lane, then Kaylyn Smith converted a layup in transition and followed up with a three-pointer from the left elbow to extend the Lady Bobcats’ lead to 25-16 with just over two minutes elapsed in the third quarter.

Sophomore post Ella Miller capped the run with six consecutive points for Berryville, all from close range.

“I thought we played really well that night,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said. “I thought we guarded them really well and I thought we executed our game plan really well. I was really, really proud of our kids for how hard they played and how they guarded. When we took care of the basketball, we did a lot of nice things. So I was just really proud of them.”

Berryville extended its lead to 16, at 36-20, on a three-pointer by junior Taelor Tomlinson with 2.1 seconds left in the third quarter, part of a 13-2 run that eventually made it 4422 on Miller’s basket with 4:02 left to play.

Smith scored 17 points, including 12 in the first half. All 12 of Miller’s points came in the final two quarters.

“She had a really, really nice second half,” Cornelison said of Miller. “When we got her the ball, they had a hard time guarding her down there and she really did a nice job of finishing around the rim and just did a lot of nice stuff for us.”

Cornelison said the Lady Bobcats’ defense is improving as the season goes on.

“It was a good win,” he said. “They’re a good ballclub.”

On Friday, Dec. 15, Berryville lost its conference opener 75-22 at Farmington. Sophomore Hailey Howerton led the Lady Bobcats with nine points.

Berryville will host Shiloh Christian at Bobcat Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 19, before traveling to Huntsville on Friday, Dec. 22.
