2 more wins push Bobcats’ streak to 7

Posted

The Berryville Bobcats extended their winning streak to seven games with a pair of 4A-1 conference victories last week.

First, the Bobcats won 5850 on the road at Huntsville on Tuesday, Jan. 13. Then they ran away from Gentry for a 69-46 win over Gentry on Friday, Jan. 16, at Bobcat Arena.

“Hopefully, we’re kind of headed in the right direction,” said Berryville coach Brent Compton, whose team broke a four-game losing streak by winning three games in as many nights in the annual CS Bank Holiday Hoops tournament and has followed that up with four consecutive conference victories.

In the victory at Huntsville, Berryville erased a 31-28 halftime deficit by outscoring the Eagles 18-6 in the third quarter. The Bobcats made three of their five three-pointers in the third quarter and junior Hudson Norris scored eight of his team-high 18 points in the third. Classmate CT Hicks added 14 points for Berryville (16-6, 4-2 4A-1).

“That’s always a hard place to play,” Compton said of Huntsville. “And we didn’t play our best, but we found a way to win.”

Against Gentry, Berryville showed off its outside shooting touch with 10 three-pointers. Six Bobcats hit at least one three-pointer.

“That was extremely encouraging,” Compton said. “That’s what I’m hoping we can consistently start doing is shooting the outside shot a lot better, at least with consistency. That opens up everything. Once we get to that point, we’ll be pretty solid.”

Smith led all scorers with 19 points against Gentry. Hicks added 13 and Norris scored 12 for Berryville, which led 35-21 at halftime.

The Bobcats close out the first half of the conference schedule by hosting Pea Ridge on Tuesday, Jan. 20, then travel to Prairie Grove on Friday, Jan. 23. Berryville will host Shiloh Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Berryville’s two conference losses have come to Prairie Grove and Shiloh Christian.

“Pea Ridge is really young,” Compton said. “They’re starting two freshmen and three sophomores. They can really shoot the ball. It’s a tough matchup for us, so we’re going to have to play really well. Then Prairie Grove and Shiloh are the two teams we’ve lost to in the league, so it would be nice to slip up on those guys the second time around.”
