106 Years Young

Posted

Happy Birthday Mary Helen Epperson. On Feb. 9 Helen turns 106!

Helen was born in 1918 — the last year of World War I. Just think of the changes in Berryville and the world in the last 106 years. Helen was born into a horse-drawn wagon world with dirt roads. Doctors made house calls with their little black bag. Houses were without indoor plumbing and electricity. No phones or radios. One room schoolhouses with a pot-belly stove and outhouse were the norm. And Berryville still had a genuine square.

Helen has seen so much — prohibition, the Depression, World War II, television, the internet and 57 Super Bowls. Not only does Helen predate this newspaper, but she predates the old Star Progress by 12 years. When she was born, the newspaper was the North Arkansas Star.

Helen enjoys receiving cards for her birthday. You may celebrate Helen’s big 106 by sending a birthday card to Helen Epperson in care of Blossoms of Berryville, 500 Hammon Avenue, Berryville AR, 72616.
