Tigers edge Lincoln, give Bergman a scare

Tuesday, January 11, 2022

Green Forest coach Shane Compton says the Tigers are capable of playing with any team in the 3A-1 conference, and the Tigers’ recent performances back him up.

Green Forest split a pair of conference games last week, winning 54-50 at Lincoln on Tuesday, Jan. 4, before losing at home to Bergman last Friday, 50-38.

Despite the final 12-point margin, Compton said the loss to Bergman should provide a confidence boost to the Tigers, who led the game in the third quarter and were tied with three minutes left before committing a pair of late turnovers and being forced to foul.

Bergman (20-5) is one of the top-ranked Class 3A teams in the state.

“Even though we lost, that should give our guys some confidence,” Compton said.

Junior guard Tony Gonzalez scored 22 points for Green Forest (9-6, 2-2 3A-1), including three three-pointers. Senior center Jordan McLoud added eight points and 15 rebounds.

In the Jan. 4 win at Lincoln, the Tigers grabbed a 36-27 halftime lead and held on down the stretch.

Gonzalez scored 21 points, while junior guards Ali Cabrera and Jay Pope added 11 and 10, respectively. McLoud had six points and team-highs with 10 rebounds and five assists.

Compton said the Tigers would be missing two starters because of illness heading into Monday night’s nonconference game at Blue Eye. Green Forest will return to conference play on Friday at Valley Springs.
