Holiday Hoops: Green Forest boys take consolation crown
The Green Forest Tigers didn’t get off on the right foot in last week’s Holiday Hoops tournament at Bobcat Arena in Berryville, but they finished in fine form.
Green Forest defeated Danville 40-35 on Thursday, Dec. 30, to win the consolation championship after losing to Rector 76-36 in the first round.
Junior guard Ali Cabrera scored 14 points in the win over Danville, while junior guard Tony Gonzalez added 10. Senior forward Isaac Demeyer grabbed 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, and senior center Jordan McLoud had eight rebounds and blocked four shots.
Green Forest overcame 26.8 percent shooting from the floor by holding Danville to 31.9 percent. Although Danville outrebounded the Tigers 45-37, Green Forest made six three-pointers compared to none by the Little Johns.
Green Forest advanced to the consolation championship with a 60-58 victory over Fordyce on Wednesday, Dec. 29. Cabrera’s three-point play after an offensive rebound capped a 5-0 Green Forest run over the final 53 seconds to clinch the win after the Tigers trailed 58-55.
Cabrera and Gonzalez scored 16 points apiece to lead four Green Forest players in double figures.
McLoud added 13 and Demeyer scored 10. McLoud had team-highs with six rebounds and three assists.
Green Forest (8-5) will play a pair of conference games this week, traveling to Lincoln on Tuesday and hosting Bergman on Friday.
