Veterans Day events scheduled across Carroll County

Kansas Army National Guard member John Kemp salutes as the National Anthem is performed at Green Forest High School’s Veterans Day ceremony in 2019. This year, Green Forest students will share a video honoring veterans on their Youtube channel.

Carroll County veterans will be honored throughout the community this Veterans Day on Thursday, Nov. 11.

The Eureka Springs Veterans Day Parade rolls through downtown Eureka Springs at 10 a.m., with lineup starting at 9 a.m. by the Eureka Springs Carnegie Public Library. The parade will be followed by a rifle salute at 11:11 a.m. at the Cat House parking lot at 82 Armstrong St.

Commander Mike Warkentin said American Legion Post 9 members are excited to see everyone at the parade, especially since last year’s parade was canceled and the 2019 parade had low attendance because of snow and ice.

“It’s very moving to see people come out and support us, and I still haven’t gotten used to the fact that when I have my hat on, people say, ‘Thank you for your service,’ ” Warkentin said. “Back in the old days, people didn’t do that, so I feel like veterans are more appreciated now than they used to be.”

Warkentin added, “It’s pretty heartwarming to have the people come support us.”

Preceding the parade, Eureka Springs High School FFA students will prepare a breakfast for veterans at 8:30 a.m. in the high school cafeteria. There will be pancakes, sausage, bacon and more. All veterans and their families are welcome to attend.

Berryville Middle School will host a breakfast for veterans at 8:15 a.m. in the middle school cafeteria. Veterans are advised to park in front of the middle school on Ferguson Street. Berryville Intermediate School will have an assembly from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the intermediate school cafeteria, featuring a performance by fourth-grade students.

Berryville High School will host an assembly at 10:45 a.m. in Bobcat Gym, with parking reserved for veterans in the lot outside the west gym entrance. Immediately after the assembly, family and consumer science students will host a luncheon for veterans and their families.

Green Forest School District won’t have an assembly, but the Tiger TV Club will post a video honoring veterans on its Youtube channel. The video will be shared on the school’s website at

Alpena High School will have a Veterans Day ceremony from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the new high school gym. There will be a luncheon after the ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., featuring soup, salad, sliders, desserts and coffee for veterans in attendance.
