Soccer: Green Forest boys trounce Bergman
Most coaches don’t like to look ahead, but Green Forest boys soccer coach Eric Perez can be forgiven for taking a sneak peek at the state tournament bracket.
“The bracket came out for the state tournament,” Perez said. “It doesn’t show us who we play but it tells us the conference.”
Green Forest, which will be the No. 1 seed from the 3A-West, will play the No. 4 seed from the 3A-South in the state tournament that begins May 13 in North Little Rock.
“That conference is probably one of the better ones in 3A,” Perez said. “So that first game is going to be against a pretty good team.”
“Pretty good” could describe the Tigers, too, although it might be a bit of an understatement.
Green Forest is ranked No. 1 among Arkansas CLass 3A teams by MaxPreps. The Tigers improved their record to 13-0-1 — including 13 consecutive victories since a season-opening tie with Class 5A Mountain Home — by rolling to a 10-0 victory over Bergman on Thursday, April 22.
Emerson Ortiz and Tony Gonzalez pulled off a double hat trick with three goals apiece. Izaak Merida, Pablo Leon, Elvin Montoya and Kelvin Garcia all added one goal apiece.
“The kids are excited, for sure,” Perez said.
Green Forest traveled to Springdale on Monday to face the Springdale High School junior varsity. The Tigers will host Eureka Springs on Tuesday and Life Way Christian on Thursday.
