Eureka Springs school board increases teachers’ base salary
The Eureka Springs School Board approved the salary schedule for the 2021-2022 school year on Monday night, agreeing to increase the base salary for teachers to $37,600.
Superintendent Bryan Pruitt said the state’s base salary is increasing from $34,000 to $36,000, and the Eureka Springs School District wanted to “stay ahead of that and be proactive on our salary schedule.”
Increasing the base salary to $37,600, Pruitt said, will help draw teachers to the district. He said that’s an increase of $500 from the base salary the board approved for the 2020-2021 school year.
“It makes our school more attractive to new teachers coming in,” Pruitt said. “We also pay up to $320 a month on everybody’s insurance. That’s right at a $4,000 benefit. It’s a nice package we have here for our staff.”
Also at the meeting, Pruitt said, the board accepted the resignations of child nutrition director Debi Arnold and elementary school music teacher Donesa Mann. Pruitt said Mann has put on many theatrical productions over the years.
“We hate to lose her. That’s going to be a huge set of shoes to fill, but we’ll forge on. We’ll find somebody,” Pruitt said.
The kind of person they’re looking for, Pruitt said, is entertaining, artistic and encouraging.
“When you’re working with the age group [Mann] does, you have to be a good motivator,” Pruitt said. “She does such an amazing job with those kids. She’s put in lots and lots of time getting those plays ready.”
Pruitt added that the district is in the middle of ACT Aspire testing.
“We’re making sure all our kids are ready for that,” Pruitt said. “
The district is doing well with observing COVID-19 safety protocols, Pruitt said. As of Monday, Pruitt said, the district had zero cases of the virus and no one was quarantined. Pruitt attributed the school district’s success to all its safety policies.
“We’re getting ready for prom and graduation,” Pruitt said. “We’re still going to wear our masks and just try to be safe and get through the end of the year.”
The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 10, in the middle school cafeteria.
