Lady Tigers’ season ends with tournament loss
By Scott Loftis
The Green Forest Lady Tigers saw a strange season come to an end with a loss at West Fork in the first round of the 3A West district tournament on Monday, Oct. 19.
“It t was an ugly, ugly loss,” Green Forest coach Christie Popejoy said.
Playing in a rugged new conference, Green Forest had to contend with long road trips, a higher level of competition and all the complications of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lady Tigers weren’t able to practice during the summer and just when they were starting to build momentum, the team was forced to quarantine for two weeks late in the regular season.
“It’s just been one of those seasons, with everything going on and people being quarantined and then coming back and us being quarantined,” Popejoy said. “Just when we started kind of clicking together, then we get sent home for a couple of weeks. It just came at the wrong time.”
The new conference didn’t make things any easier, with the Lady Tigers having to travel to places like Booneville and Atkins.
Still, Popejoy is optimistic about the future.
“Hopefully next year we can at least do all our summer stuff and be more prepared,” she said.
