Changes coming to classifications
The Green Forest Tigers will be moving up to Class 4A beginning in 2018. This will only affect the football team, as basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, volleyball and softball will remain in Class 3A.
"It's not good for us," Green Forest athletic director Bobby Bishop said. "It's just for football. They (Arkansas Activities Association) have a proposal going before the members for basketball and the other sports to go to six classifications in the state of Arkansas. All the other sports would stay 3A. These numbers are really just affecting us in football. It wasn't a big surprise because we knew eventually we would be going to 4A. We didn't think it would be this coming cycle, but the one after. It wasn't a big surprise to me."
Along with the proposal to go to six classifications in most sports, there is talk of breaking up the soccer conferences as well. It is undetermined when these changes will take place, though.
"It may be awhile," Bishop said. "I think there is a change coming in soccer as well. The combined classifications, they are trying to get away from that. We will see how that works out. I can't tell you when that would be decided."
Berryville athletic director Brent Compton isn't excited about the proposal being handed down by the AAA.
"I don't feel like it's in the best interest for Berryville as far as the other sports, except for football," Compton said. "It won't affect football. It will stay the same either way, but if they change the classifications, I don't think it's good for us at all. And I hope it doesn't pass."
These changes will take effect in the fall of 2018 and remain in effect until the spring of 2020.
