Community effort: GF rallies around family after fatal fire
The Green Forest community has risen up to help a local family recover after a fatal fire.
Green Forest Police Chief John Bailey said the fire occurred the morning of Friday, April 21, at a home on Pine Street. He said Rodolfo Canoy, 82, died in the fire. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Dr. Lisa Carlon, federal programs coordinator and director of instruction for the Green Forest School District, said the schools have reached out to the family to offer support. She said Canoy left behind a daughter and four grandchildren.
“The school counselors, Jonie Standlee and Kathy Poff, have been very involved in organizing the district’s efforts,” she said. “We’re raising funds and taking the family shopping for any items they need. They lost everything in the fire.”
Carlon said a GoFundMe account was set up by one of the grandchildren’s teammates and has raised almost $1,000 so far. The family has also been set up in an apartment by local residents, she said.
“We have a very supportive community in Green Forest, and we’re hoping to do as much as we can for the family,” she said.
Carlon said donations to the family can be made at GoFundMe.com/ha6ts-Helping-A-Friend-In-Need. She said clothing donations can also be dropped off at the school. Anyone wishing to donate clothing can contact intermediate and middle school counselor Kathy Poff for information on the sizes needed.
