HI Quilters view 113-year-old quilt blocks
At the Holiday Island Quilters Guild Sept. 19 meeting, Marquis Jones of Holiday Island shared his 113-year-old quilt blocks with members.
Sewn in a "crazy quilt" pattern, the beautifully embroidered blocks were sewn on paper backings. The newspapers, "The Republic," were from Charleston, Ark., a small community southeast of Fort Smith.
"Most of the newspapers were dated 1900, and the articles were as interesting as the quilt blocks!" said Suzanne Childers, guild coordinator.
Jones has approximately 20 of these quilt blocks, all hand-stitched by his grandmother. Holiday Island Quilters suggested that these unique blocks be framed in double-sided glass and/or consult an area museum for archival information.
