EUREKA SPRINGS -- The Eureka Springs junior high track teams made a run at the championship at the 1AA Junior High District Track meet Tuesday at their track and field complex but came up short to Cedarville.

The Pirates won both first-place trophies, with the Highlanders earning runner-up metal.

Coach Hassell Bell said that some of the kids that filled in spots did well, complimenting a number of outstanding regulars who have been at every meet.

"Kelly Clarke won the high jump, and hasn't done that since seventh-grade, and people stepped up in the relays and other events," Bell said. "The boys had some injuries and others missing, but gave some real good effort.

"The boys 3200m relay team was faster with some new faces, a 9:32, so the boys came to compete. Wes Prado had an outstanding meet. He just missed high point, 35 points to 38.

"Casey Henderson defended her district title and won the 800m dash in a photo finish," Bell said. "Callie Smith ran excellent in the mile and won, and Alta Johnson did well in the 400m dash. She has been getting tougher all year."

The ninth-graders were expected to move up to the senior high team for that meet on Thursday, which gives them a chance to qualify for the Class AA State Track Meet next week on Thursday, May 19, at Dardanelle.
