William J. Martes
WILLIAM JOSEPH MARTES was born Dec. 20, 1943, to the late Joseph and Josephine Martes. He was one of three children and is survived by one sister and one brother. He died on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the age of 60.
William, better known as Bill to all his friends, walked his own path in life and his accomplishments were many. Bill was an emergency medical technician (EMT) in Kansas City, Mo., for many years. He pioneered the unionization of EMTs in Kansas City, helping to raise salaries and increase benefits for the profession in that area. Due to his experience as an EMT, he was honorarily appointed to the teaching faculty at the University of Kansas Medical School in 1963. Later in his life, he was also a successful entrepreneur with his courier company, Windy Point Carriers.
Bill fulfilled his dream to be closer to the outdoors when he retired to Arkansas in 2001. He resided in Green Forest until his death.
He leaves his spouse, Marilyn; a daughter, Colleen, four grandchildren; one son-in-law, David; one nephew and a host of other relatives and friends.
