Volley Tigers top Lady Leopards
"We finally found our combination," Coach Vicki Magdafrau said after her varsity volleyball team defeated the Alpena Lady Leopards 15-13, 15-2, 15-5, for a big regular season win last Thursday night. The team is now 2-4 on the season.
Magdafrau said Summer Williamson, Monica Pineda, Hayley Roney, LaRae Jones, Ana Guerrero, and Maria Camacho "played well together as a team and served 78 percent. Ana was 12 for 12, and Monica served for 10 points in game two.
"We passed the ball well and our net play was outstanding. We didn't make mistakes. Coach Diana Hodges and I think we're on the right road," Magdafrau said. "We had a vision that it would take time, but the players are coming together and need to go on to the next level now."
The JV team went three games and lost 15-10, 16-18, 13-15, moving their record to 4-1.
"We played 15 girls," Magdafrau said. "We would get going, then substitute, which kills momentum. But everyone played and contributed."
Magdafrau said Mandy Kilgore served for eight points, and Becky Peden was getting consistent as a setter. Nicki Kilbourn had seven points off serve and also some good kills. In game three, Casey Veach had five points off serve.
The junior high girls also got a match victory, winning 15-10, 9-15, 15-8.
"We usually win one of the two games we play, but this time we played three," Magdafrau said. "We served 77 percent for the match. We had 16 players and played everybody. Cristal Griffin did well, and Kamara Hoppe played with a lot of intensity. Megan Bennett served the winning point the first game."
The teams traveled to Marshall Tuesday to play.
