CAPC approves $36K for chair lift

The Auditorium will have a new wheelchair lift soon.

On Wednesday, Oct. 27, the Eureka Springs City Advertising and Promotion Commission agreed to purchase a new wheelchair lift for the building. Commissioner Harry Meyer said he received a “definite quote … under $36,000, just barely,” for a full installation from 101 Mobility. That means 101 Mobility will remove and dispose of the existing wheelchair lift, install the new wheelchair lift and make sure it works, Meyer said. Commissioner Melissa Greene said on Monday that the wheelchair lift will be placed on the stairs at the lobby level of the Auditorium.

“It meets all the ADA requirements. It’s battery-powered,” Meyer said. “It’ll work if the power goes off.”

Chair Jeff Carter asked if the commission needed to find other bidders and Meyer said no.

“It’s a $50,000 limit. It was jacked up last year by the legislature because of inflation, so we can take this bid without worrying about it,” Meyer said.

Greene moved to “accept the bid of Mobility 101 LLC and buy this lift” and the commission unanimously agreed to do so.

Carter then asked where the money would come from and finance director Scott Bardin said the commission would need to set up a line item or designate a line item to pay the deposit.

There’s around $311,000 in the reserves account, Bardin said. Carter said he recommended to “create a line item that’s capital expenditures and that we put some of … that reserve money in there and let’s go ahead and pay for this and we can just make that a separate motion and second.”

Greene then moved “that we do a line item and that we use some of our reserves for the line item,” adding that the line item would be for capital expenditures. The commission unanimously approved the motion.

“That’s going to be nice,” Greene said.

“It’s definitely needed, right?” Carter said. “We need to make sure we can get everyone here … we can get them in and out of here safely.”

Tourism director Madison Dawson updated the commission on the staff’s move from the office on East Van Buren to the Aud, recalling the commission’s Sept. 22 vote to allocate $2,800 to renovate downstairs office space at the Aud. Dawson said the renovations will start with the flooring. A contractor recently came by to check out the space, Dawson said, and pulled up some of the carpet.

“We originally thought we’d be able to redo the original flooring in there. It’s a big mess,” Dawson said. “It’s going to take a lot more than we thought it would, so we’re going to go ahead and get laminate flooring.”

Dawson said the flooring should be installed by the first week of November. In the meantime, Dawson said, the staff is focusing on removing office furniture. Dawson said the existing office furniture will be sold and that revenue will be used to purchase new office furniture. Dawson estimated the total cost for new office furniture at $4,950.

“I think that’s reasonable,” Greene said.

Meyer mentioned that there’s a conference table at the CAPC office on East Van Buren and commissioner Carol Wright said that piece of furniture is “spoken for.”

“The city asked us to basically … make the furniture available to other departments. Parks wants the table … and someone else wants an L-shaped desk,” Wright said. “That’s all they claimed.”

Greene moved to spend $5,000 on new office furniture and the commission unanimously agreed to do so.

Also at the meeting, the commission agreed to spend $7,500 to renew its contract with Crowd Riff, a co-op agreement between the commission and the state of Arkansas. Dawson said it’s the platform the commission uses “to get all our organic social media assets.”

The commission’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Auditorium.
