Great Passion Play opens this weekend
The Great Passion Play will open on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, April 2 and 3, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. The Great Passion Play is offering specially discounted tickets for locals this weekend and for performances in May, August, and October. Residents or anyone who works in Carroll County can get tickets for only $7 for performances of The Great Passion Play. Simply show proof of residence in Carroll County and enjoy the Play, the Bible Museum, the Sacred Arts Museum, and History Museum.
“Last year was a challenging year for the world, but because of our outdoor seating, we only missed four shows,” said Randall Christy, the Passion Play’s executive director. “In fact, according to the numbers from the Institute of Outdoor Theatre, over half of all people nationwide who attended outdoor dramas actually came to The Great Passion Play.” Christy shared that replacing the Art Museum roof was a major project this year.
“This year, we are very excited for a major upgrade to our sound and light systems,” director of operations Kent Butler said. “The heads of sound and lighting, Josh Webster and Chandler Mann, from 2nd Baptist Houston came and pushed us into the 21st century with new LED lights and some major state-of-the-art upgrades to the sound. This wouldn’t have been possible though without the generous support of donors who underwrote this project.”
Featuring a cast of more than 100 actors and actresses, the Play is performed amid a 550-foot historically accurate stage and brings to life the thrilling epic drama surrounding Christ’s last days on earth, including his death, resurrection and ascension. The Great Passion Play runs 1 hour and 45 minutes, featuring an original musical score composed by Phil Perkins and performed by the world-renowned National Philharmonic Orchestra of London. This year’s performance also features horses, donkeys, a Pharaoh Hound, and dozens of birds.
Visitors are able to walk through Jerusalem’s Eastern Gate, experience a Biblical Marketplace, and journey through recreations of the Holy Land including the Tabernacle in the Wilderness. See the Sacred Arts Museum with hundreds of rare works in 64 different forms and the Bible Museum with 6,000 Bibles (including an original 1611 King James Version of the Bible) and artifacts dating back to 2,000 B.C. A buffet dinner is served on nights the Play is performed.
The Great Passion Play’s 2021 season will run from Good Friday and Saturday, resuming on Memorial Day weekend, and continuing on through the end of October on most Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights.
