Opera in the Ozarks launches online class

Tuesday, March 23, 2021

Opera in the Ozarks at Inspiration Point, the prominent opera training program and summer music festival in Eureka Springs, has announced a new virtual music academy dedicated to preparing high school-age students on the path to becoming professional musicians.

The Instrumental Academy at Inspiration Point is an Opera in the Ozarks summer enrichment program geared toward high school instrumentalists who are considering college undergraduate degrees in music performance or education.

Led by young professional musicians who are part of the Opera in the Ozarks orchestra, the three-week academy will be held June 1-19, 2021 and offered virtually for its inaugural year. Applications are being accepted now.

Opera in the Ozarks Artistic Director Thomas Cockrell said the academy will provide exciting opportunities for students who wish to learn and grow this summer, before returning to their high school rehearsal rooms or embarking on college.

“We’ve shaped this academy to fit the needs of high school musicians who aspire to the college-level study of music,” Cockrell said. “For three weeks, we’ll introduce them to the diverse activities, disciplines and rigor they might encounter in the first years of a college undergraduate curriculum in performance or music education.”

“Academy faculty are Opera in the Ozarks musicians who are young performers and educators with enthusiasm to share their knowledge, experience and perspectives,” Cockrell said.

Academy students will meet for two online sessions daily, Tuesday through Friday, over the course of the three weeks. The program will end with a final celebratory concert for academy students, their families and faculty on Saturday, June 19, at Inspiration Point.

Academy curriculum & activities will include:

Private instruction for students, including All-State audition preparation and master classes.

Weekly opportunities to observe and interact with faculty during chamber music rehearsals.

Daily instruction in musicianship skills, theory and history, similar to what students will encounter as college freshmen.

Opera 101: a first experience with the dynamic art of opera, joining music, theater, visual arts and literature. Students will be introduced to French Romantic composer Jules Massenet’s Cendrillon, the Cinderella tale.

Applications and auditions begin March 15 through April 15. Following that, acceptance to the academy will be based on space availability.

Notification of acceptance will be emailed to students by May 1.
